Building Inclusive Classrooms: Lessons from My Student Teaching Experience

During my student teaching placement, I had the privilege of working in two 5th grade ICT (Integrated Co-Teaching) classrooms in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District on Long Island. These classrooms, with a combined total of over 40 students, provided a vibrant and diverse learning environment. I worked closely with students with ADHD, autism, and other learning disabilities, gaining invaluable experience in supporting a wide range of learning needs.

My placement lasted from January through May, and after completing it, I continued in the building as a substitute teacher until the end of the school year. This extended time allowed me to build meaningful relationships with students, collaborate with both general and special education teachers, and truly immerse myself in the daily life of the school community. I learned firsthand how to adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners, and I saw the positive impact that thoughtful, individualized support can have.

My Philosophy: Every Child Can Learn

At the heart of my teaching philosophy is the belief that every child can learn when given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities. I strive to meet students where they are, focusing on their strengths while addressing areas where they may need extra support. Patience, flexibility, and collaboration are essential for promoting growth, and I place a high value on building strong relationships with students and their families. These connections create trust and provide a strong foundation for success.

The Power of Inclusion

I am a strong advocate for inclusion. When implemented thoughtfully, inclusive classrooms allow students with disabilities to learn alongside their peers, helping them build academic skills, social confidence, and independence. Inclusion is not just beneficial for students with disabilities—it enriches the classroom for everyone. All students benefit from an environment that fosters empathy, collaboration, and an appreciation for diversity.

My experiences in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District have shaped my approach to teaching and reinforced my commitment to inclusive education. I am excited to continue learning and growing as an educator, always striving to create classrooms where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
